SOURCES & APPROACH

Short answers.
Sources behind them.

Start with the kind of trip

Tourism and moving are different. The second view groups residence, study and work for navigation; requirements can still differ between those permits. A health test for workers does not automatically apply to tourists, and testing does not always mean refusal.

Four useful signals

No restrictions. The cited source reports no HIV-specific restriction for this purpose. Visa requirements and medication import remain separate checks.

Restrictions. Sources report an HIV-related restriction, refusal or removal risk. The exact scope appears on the destination page.

Check first. A specific condition, medical assessment or source conflict needs checking for your trip.

No data. The evidence is missing, contradictory or not specific enough. It does not establish permission or non-enforcement.

Colours describe HIV-specific rules and reported risks, not general travel safety, social acceptance, visa eligibility or guaranteed entry. There is no numerical score and no assumed “zero enforcement”.

Where the information comes from

We consulted 201 country and territory profiles from Positive Destinations, run by HIV Justice Network, on 11 October 2026. Its country-wide and short-stay categories are research leads, not automatic tourist verdicts. We separate the relevant sections, preserve conflicting evidence and link to the original profile.

For the countries with practical exceptions, we compare available government, immigration and medicine-regulator sources. Each detail shows its source. A foreign-government advisory is guidance with its own scope; it is not the destination’s legislation. This is not a completed check of every visa or passport.

The source’s update date and our retrieval date mean different things. A newly retrieved page may still rely on older information. Government-linked pages can change; conflicts stay visible rather than being converted to permission.

Medicine and enforcement

No reported HIV entry restriction does not automatically clear medication. Active ingredients, supply, prescriptions and import permits need a separate check. “Not verified” means we do not have a dependable answer. Rare enforcement and no border screening are not the same as no rule.

Stories have their own place

Linked experiences include personal accounts and reported cases, labelled separately. We verify the source text, not the event itself. These accounts add context but cannot establish a rule or predict someone else’s experience. We do not estimate acceptance rates from them. Contributions require review before publication.

Independent, with attribution

hiv.travel is not affiliated with Positive Destinations, HIV Justice Network, UNAIDS or any government. We write short factual summaries and link to the research behind them. This is a research preview. Forms accept fictional test details only until the public operator, privacy contact and moderation arrangements are complete. Independent editorial review is still needed before clinic distribution.
